The basic training for police dog handlers is the same all over Sweden. The training is in 2 parts. First 4 weeks basic training, followed by work in your home district together with a qualified dog handler, for a period of 3 - 4 weeks. After that you return to the school for a further 3 weeks of training. Official patch for Swedish doghandler. Selection of Police dog handlers varies from district to district. In Helsingborg you have to have been a police officer for at least 5 years and be very interested in dogs. You get to work on a trial basis with 2 qualified dog handlers for approx. 4 weeks. If you are subsequently assessed as suitable you can begin basic training. Basic training is carried out in Karlsborg. This is the location of the new police dog school. Previously training was done outside Stockholm in Tullinge.
